There is not a version of La-Mulana for operating systems such as Linux or Mac OS X. Fortunately, La-Mulana sort of works in the Windows compatibility layer Wine.

La-Mulana will crash unless some native Windows DirectX DLLs are used. You should install 'directmusic' using winetricks. Or you could turn off sound entirely, but that would eliminate the game's audio clues and beautiful music.

How to set up La-Mulana for use in Wine.

On Mac, WineBottler is an easy way to install and run Wine. Pack La Mulana into a Mac app, and make sure to check 'directmusic' in the Winetricks section.

Installing 'directmusic' using using winetricks installs native DirectMusic DLLs and configures which Wine DLLs to override.

Alt-Enter (or Command-Enter on Mac) switches between fullscreen and windowed modes.

If you want to run LamulanaJukeBox.exe, you will also need to install 'directmusic' using winetricks.

Wine-specific bugs

  • The boss fights with Amphisbaena and Sakit are incredibly slow-mo, as are the minibosses that cause the screen to flash (Anubis, that one in the labyrinth), and the ending. The controls are also slow to respond. This makes Amphisbaena easier and Sakit harder. (Wine 1.0-rc4, Mac OS X 10.4.11: also on wine-1.1.40_0+darwin_10, Mac OS X 10.6.2; and Gentoo x86 wine-1.1.38, but on Gentoo the slowdown is not that severe)
  • Tiamat's hair attack will also slow the game down, but will no longer crash it. (Wine 1.2.3 on Mac OS X 10.7.2, unconfirmed on other platforms)
